Wine Enthusiast Scores from April 2014
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 FORTIS Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 94 points in the April issue of Wine Enthusiast!
“If you’re looking for classic Napa Cabernet, this utterly delicious bottling is right there. Blended with some Petit Verdot and Merlot, it’s a selection of the winery’s extensive acreage across the Stags Leap, Rutherford, Carneros and Oakville appellations, showcasing the synergy of blending. The wine is dry, full-bodied, firm in tannins and extraordinarily lush, with blackberry, black currant, chocolate, plum, toasty oak and spice flavors. It’s so good now that you can drink it, but it holds the inherent balance to age for up to 15 years.” — S.H.
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 93 points in the April issue of Wine Enthusiast!
“So ripe and beautiful in fruit and oak, so balanced in tannins and acids, that it’s hard to know whether to enjoy this Cab now or age it. Right now, it’s elaborate in blackberry, cherry, currant and new oak flavors, wrapped into insanely fine tannins. But it’s also balanced enough to develop bottle complexity over the next 10 years.” — S.H.
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 93 points in the April issue of Wine Enthusiast!
“So ripe and rich in raspberries, cherries, red currants and cocoa, with sweet, buttered toast new French oak complexities, this Cab is fantastic to drink now. It shows all the flash and gorgeousness you want in a Napa Cab. Will it age? Yes, for a long time, but you’re best off uncorking it over the next few years for its sheer beauty.” — S.H.
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Dijon Clones Chardonnay was rated 92 points in the April issue of Wine Enthusiast!
“This is the winery’s best Dijon Clones Chardonnay ever. It shows the balanced, long hangtime fruit of the vintage, bursting with ripe flavors of pineapples, oranges, honeydew melons and pears, along with toasty new French oak and vibrant acidity. What a yummy wine to drink with scallops or crab.” — S.H.
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 92 points in the April issue of Wine Enthusiast!
“This 100% Cabernet shows the extensive tannins of its mountain terroir. But, as hard as they are, they’re refined enough to drink now. The flavors are wonderfully ripe in blackberries and cassis, with sweet caramel and butterscotch from new French oak. The wine will develop bottle complexity through at least 2018.” — S.H.
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 92 points in the April issue of Wine Enthusiast!
“This 100% Cab shows Oakville’s firm tannins, balanced acids and dryness, as well as its black currant and cassis flavors, in a wine of great elegance and sophistication. It doesn’t seem like an ager, but it sure is deliciously fancy to drink over the next few years with your favorite Cabernet-friendly fare.” — S.H.

Winemaking update from Assistant Winemaker Jason Ledbetter
After a great harvest and our holiday break we have been working on one of the best parts of the year, tasting. We have gone through and started to grade out every lot of wine we have made in 2013 on multiple occasions. We are currently racking all the 2013 red wines out of barrel, cleaning the barrels and taking the wine back down. This helps to “clean” the wine up aromatically. Once we conclude this process we will taste all the wines again and begin to start putting blends together.
We were so blessed with the 2012 Vintage it is hard to believe that the 2013 Vintage shows early indications to be even better. The consistent weather and lack of rain post ripening has given us the opportunity to craft some remarkable 2013 lots of wine. We are ecstatic to begin the blending process early in February. Once we complete the 2013 blends we will transition into bottling the 2012 Vintage.
Winemaker Michael Beaulac and Jason Ledbetter
Vineyard update from Vineyard Manager Gustavo Avina
Our ponds are empty and the temperature is above normal (70′s).
Right now the only activity at the vineyards is pruning the vines. Our crews are very focused in selecting the best shoots according to vine vigor, too long of shoots may lead to weak vines later on the season. Since we have no rain, pruning is going very fast and with this weather I am predicting bud break earlier than normal. We still have a few more months left for mother nature to fill the reservoirs, which supply most of our water for our growing season.
2013 Chenin Blanc + Viognier takes home the gold!
Pine Ridge 2013 Chenin Blanc + Viognier received Gold at the 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition!
Brilliant and refreshing, this bottling of our remarkable blend bursts with an array of delightful aromas, opening with fresh lemon, juicy honeydew melon, pomelo and sweet mango, complemented by soft orange blossom and carnation floral notes. The palate is crisp and mouth-watering, leading with luscious papaya, yellow pear and ruby grapefruit flavors that are balanced by hints of sweet tangerine and white tea. The juicy fruit flavors linger through the clean and lively finish.

Stunning reviews from Robert Parker’s, The Wine Advocate
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 FORTIS Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 97 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortis is meant to be the choicest selection from all of this estate’s vineyard holdings. Its opaque purple color is followed by a classic bouquet of blackberries, cassis, camphor and graphite. Super-rich, supple and full-bodied with cassis, blackberry, oak and floral flavors, this is a tour de force in winemaking as well as one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted from Pine Ridge. It should offer delicious drinking over the next 20-25 years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 94 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“From the Stags Leap District (the home base of Pine Ridge), the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is loaded with notes of dark chocolate, spring flowers, black cherries and black currants. This medium to full-bodied, flavorful, pure wine possesses lots of nobility, intensity and richness, but there is not a hard edge to be found in this beauty. For sheer complexity, it is hard to beat. Moreover, it should drink well for 10-15 years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 93 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford offers up beautiful aromas of tar, truffles, forest floor and black fruits. Broad, full-bodied, expansive and opulent, this stunning, silky, irresistible 2010 is filled with purity, power and symmetry. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 92 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The deep ruby/purple-colored 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville exhibits more floral notes (acacia flowers) intermixed with blueberries, black currants and hints of vanillin as well as Christmas spices. Round, velvety tannins and a full-bodied mouthfeel make for an approachable and impressively well-made Cabernet Sauvignon. It should drink well for 15 or more years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2010 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was rated 91+ points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain possesses the raspberry, rhubarb, crushed rock and floral characteristics I often associate with Howell Mountain. A touch of graphite is also present in this more masculine, fuller-bodied, rich, dense, beautifully textured Cabernet. It is another stunning effort from Pine Ridge, who seems to be doing their best work at present. The Howell Mountain cuvee should drink well young, but last for 20+ years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 FORTIS Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Sample was given a projected rating of 96-100 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The flagship, uber cuvee is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortis. Slightly more restrained than the single appellation wines, it boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as a plethora of flowery scents intermixed with blueberry liqueur and black currants, a touch of background oak, an incredible core of richness, sweetness and precision, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. This young, promising wine is truly world-class! It should provide immense pleasure over the next 25 years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Sample was given a projected rating of 95-97 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap combines elegance and finesse with unbridled power as well as spectacular depth and richness. Black currant, blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with floral, licorice and foresty notes are followed by a full-bodied, opulent, magnificent expression of Stags Leap that will age for 20+ years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Sample was given a projected rating of 94-96 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is another prodigious example of Pine Ridge’s abilities and talents. Graphite, floral, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and coffee notes provide the entire spectrum of red, blue and black fruits. In the mouth, the wine reveals no hard edges, just sweet tannin and an explosion of fruit, glycerin and intensity. This knock-out Cabernet is another compelling reason to buy this estate’s wines.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Sample was given a projected rating of 94-96 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford is another blockbuster, rich, concentrated, spectacular example of Rutherford fruit. This compelling 2012 is slightly fruitier and fleshier than the 2010.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Sample was given a projected rating of 93-95 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville exhibits a dense purple color along with loads of licorice, cassis, spring flower and forest floor-like notes. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and succulent, this wine should drink well for 15-20 years.”
Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Sample was given a projected rating of 90-92 points by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate!
“The 2012s barrel samples I tasted include the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, an inky/purple-colored wine with loads of flowery black currant fruit, sweet tannins and a slightly more generous, fleshier, fatter mid-palate and finish than the 2010′s. It will last 15+ years.”

Be among the first to experience the new Epitome
The Epitome of a vintage—an ideal example or embodiment, created only in exceptional years.
In 2010, our winemaking team was drawn to the fruit bestowed by block three of our Cornerstone Vineyard, set along the northeastern border of the renowned Stags Leap District. Unique in character and rare in number, we release this very special wine in celebration of our 35th anniversary.
Block Three of our Cornerstone Vineyard was exclusively selected to tell the story of the 2010 vintage through this stellar bottling. Situated on the northernmost edge of the Stags Leap District, this vineyard is densely planted and the vines are trained low to the ground, in order to produce low yields with optimal, even ripeness.
HARVEST AND WINEMAKING
The 2010 vintage was cooler than usual during the growing season, but ended with a heat wave. As a result, our Cabernet was harvested at an optimal level of ripeness in mid-October. The wine was fermented in French oak puncheons, with punchdowns done daily by hand. Fermentation took place at a high temperature to ensure that maximum extraction was achieved before the wine was racked to 65% new French oak barrels for aging. The wine was aged in barrel for a total of 18 months before bottling.
This intense, opaque ruby wine offers a rich and enchanting nose, teeming wtih aromas of ripe red raspberry, fresh blackberry and cassis, woven beneath elegant layers of fine baker’s cocoa, spun sugar and subtle ground clove. Opening smoothly, with a rush of luscious blackcurrant and black raspberry pie, the velvety palate is supple and balanced by touches of sweet cinnamon and nutmeg, plush tannins and a hint of graham cracker crust on the lasting finish.
Deep and concentrated, the 2010 Epitome Cabernet Sauvignon would make an exquisite accompaniment to a number of beautiful meals, including braised pork shoulder with seasonal vegetables or pan-roasted duck breast with wild mushroom risotto. This exclusive bottling would also pair well with aged Mahón, a hard, flavorful cow’s milk cheese from Spain, for an unforgettable cheese course.

Pine Ridge 2012 Chenin Blanc + Viognier was rated 90 points by Robert Parker
Pine Ridge 2012 Chenin Blanc + Viognier was rated 90 points by Robert Parker in the August 2013 issue of The Wine Advocate for the fourth consecutive vintage!
“A consistent winner in the value sweepstakes, this offering from winemaker Michael Beaulac is a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier. This dry white offers a stunning aromatic display of honeydew melons, spring flowers, pears and cantaloupe. The sumptuous perfume is followed by a wine with crisp, zesty acids, medium body and abundant purity as well as freshness. The Viognier component no doubt pushes this delightful white toward an exotic, tropical fruit-flavored style. Luckily, there are 87,000 cases produced. This beauty is meant to be consumed over the next year.”
We’ve captured the essence of Rutherford
Our 2010 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon received 93 points from Wine Spectator.
Look out for this wine in your November 2013 wine club shipment!
“This week’s highlights, all hailing from this top location, are led by Pine Ridge, Nickel & Nickel and Piña.
These wines share an outstanding depth of flavor, a pleasing earthiness and broad, fleshy tannins. Yet for all their youthful allure, the wines from this region remain notably ageworthy. Overall, Rutherford Cabs offer early‐drinking charm as well as the complexity, layered flavors and multitude of textures that come with cellaring.
Pine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford 2010 Score: 93 | $80
Captures the refined flavors, finesse and fine grain tannins of the appellation, nothing showy here but the essence of Rutherford is captured in its subtle mix of ripe plum, currant and cherry, all refined and graceful and beautifully balanced. Drink now through 2025.

Why are Barrel / Cooperage Trials Important in Winemaking?
Wine education with Pine Ridge Vineyards Assistant Winemaker, Jason Ledbetter.
Choosing the proper barrels for each wine made is a crucial decision in showcasing a wines distinction. Oak influence should always lift the fruit expression of the vineyard where the grapes are grown and enhance the mid palate and body of a wine. We aim to make wines with a sense of place that showcase our Vineyards and the typicity of each sub AVA within the Napa Valley.
A barrel trial is the only way we can grade and determine the effects each cooper has on our fruit. The source of the oak, the toasting profile and the house style each cooper presents will ultimately show up in the final wine that is made. Utilizing a barrel trial for 18 months each Vintage helps us to ensure we are using the proper barrels for each wine we make at Pine Ridge Vineyards.
The right oak barrels for each wine will help soften the tannins and mouth feel while enhancing the aromatics of a wine. Just a few of the common aromatics that come from Oak barrels are vanilla, caramel, graham cracker, clove, spice, chocolate and a sweetness that enhances the fruit from the grape itself.

Learn About Phenolics in Red Wine with Pine Ridge Vineyards Assistant Winemaker, Jason Ledbetter
The 2012 vintage in Napa Valley was an exceptional vintage for free anthocyanin, or available color, in wine. The Pine Ridge Vineyards 2012 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented to maximize this color by slowly extracting grape skin and seed tannin during fermentation. This tannin binds with the free anthocyanin to create the luscious mid palate, high end, well crafted Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is known for.
Tannin and free anthocyanin fall under the category of phenolic compounds. The phenolic compounds are found in the grape skin and seeds and are what give red wine color, weight and body. Each vintage these phenolic compounds are slightly different due to the growing season, picking decisions and measures taken in the vineyard. It is up to each winemaker or winemaking team to recognize these differences in phenolic compounds and set fermentation practices to achieve the desired style of wine they would like to make.

2013 Spring Vineyard Operations
The three most important vineyard operations in the annual lifecycle of the vines are pruning, shoot thinning (suckering), and of course, harvest.
Shoot thinning (suckering) is what our vineyard team is doing right now. It consists of removing the unwanted shoots by hand, so the vine concentrates its energy in less shoots, and less clusters of grapes. This step allows for more light inside the canopy, and more air flowing around the fruit.
Shoot thinning is very important for grapes quality, and quantity.
Enjoy your summer with any of our wines!
