Eager to portray the dramatic diversity at play in the Napa Valley, Pine Ridge has acquired some 160 acres of vineyard spanning five wildly unique AVAs.

For Ryan Decker, farming is part of a family story stretching back more than 160 years. A fifth generation Northern California farmer, he brings a deep respect for the land and a curiosity for how each vineyard can reach its fullest potential. His approach looks beyond the vines themselves, considering soils, biodiversity and the entire vineyard ecosystem as interconnected. After decades farming vineyards from valley floors to rugged mountaintops, Ryan now brings that experience to Pine Ridge, where he embraces the remarkable diversity of our estate vineyards and the distinct character each Napa Valley appellation brings to the wines.

Access to such a broad set of sites within the valley affords unique opportuities. We can spotlight the characteristics of sub-appellations or take advantage of the added range of clones, sites, and varietals through nuanced blends. With terroir as our compass, the destination is always distinctive aromatics and flavors.

“I’ve always seen viticulture as this wonderful balance between art and science. We have a number of technical tools to help us understand the land, but it takes years to learn the subtle rhythm of each vineyard and translate their raw potential into extraordinary wine.” – Ryan Decker, Viticulture Director

Stags Leap District Vineyards

This valley within a valley touts its own versatile microclimate, one that exposes some rows to warmer temperatures and others to cool conditions. That translates to invigorating fresh fruit here and rich and deep fruit there—the makings of a balanced and structured wine built around well-developed tannins that are as smooth as velvet. Stags Crown Vineyard

Stags Crown Vineyard

Aptly named, Stags Crown rests at the very top of the district. This decidedly royal setting, where the Silverado Trail and Yountville Cross meet, brushes off the morning fog the quickest and enjoys plenty of sunlight. Careful pruning in the vineyard creates a more protective leaf canopy that shades the resident clusters. Wines from here are known to be rich and bold, teeming with dark berry and baking spice notes.

circle hill vineyard

Circle Hill Vineyard

A favorite of winemaker Josh Widaman, Circle Hill resides just a mile north of the winery. The coiling nature of the site reminds of a nautilus shell, vineyard rows wound neadly around the hill. The patchwork of blocks here is treated accordingly, harvested independently and thoughtfully blended before bottling. Cabernet Sauvignon from this 30-year-old site is so often striking, powerful, and age-worthy. Think dark cherry, mocha, and baking spice before a long, brooding finish.

andrus estate

Andrus Estate Vineyard

Andrus Estate is where the Pine Ridge tale begins, acquired in 1978 by our fearless founder. The site has since become a symbol of the brand, picturesque and terraced vineyards rooted in soils Andrus knew were full of winemaking gold. This dramatic 23.5-acre vineyard climbs 400 feet from the winery and is capped by a crown of pines. The horseshoe shape results in swirling winds and cooling afternoon shadows that promote long and even ripening. The wines are bright, offering red cherry, graphite, and ripe plum notes.

locked horns vineyard

Locked Horns Vineyard

There’s a flow to Locked Horns Vineyard, set along a gently sloping alluvial fan. The soils here are deep and composed of gravel and sandy silt, deposited long ago by the Napa River and its tributaries. In esteemed company, the vineyard shares a property line — and soil classification — with the Fay and S.L.V vineyards of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars fame. Wines from this site show an elegant acidity rounded out by bold dark berry characteristics and outspoken tannins.
