This limited-production blend celebrates several intriguing varietals and provides the perfect showcase for the distinctive velvet blueberry expression of Malbec. Onyx brings together Malbec, Merlot and Tannat—all grown on our densely-planted estate vineyards throughout the Napa Valley.
The fruit for this wine was selected from a collection of our estate vineyards throughout the Napa Valley, mainly Rutherford, Carneros and Stags Leap District. The distinctive terroir of these prestigious appellations as well as the dense planting and meticulous farming by our vineyard crews contribute to the richness and complexity of this unique bottling.
Harvest & Winemaking
The 2010 vintage was cooler than usual during the growing season, but ended with a heat wave. As a result, the fruit for this wine was harvested at an optimal level of ripeness late September to mid-October. Fermentation took place at a high temperature to ensure that maximum extraction was achieved before the wine was racked to 30% new French oak barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for a total of 18 months before bottling.
Presenting a beautiful garnet-black hue in the glass, this wine expresses an array of aromas that are equally attractive: bright black plum, warm blackberry pie, sweet vanilla and fennel pollen. The supple, creamy entry fills the palate with fresh Bing cherry and black raspberry flavors that seamlessly intertwine with touches of graham cracker, spiced cocoa and star anise. Fine tannins balance the palate and carry on through the unwavering finish, echoing with hints of ground clove and nutmeg.
A full-bodied and fruit forward wine, this vintage of Onyx would make a fine partner for any hearty dish off the grill, such as lamb and gruyere sliders or even barbecued baby back ribs and potato salad. A pairing of Onyx and Beemster X.O. Double Aged Gouda would make for a unique and delicious cheese course.
