Each vintage, our production team has the opportunity to consider the fruits of the year’s harvest and create Contemplate, a blend that showcases the rarer Bordeaux varietals. Our winemaker and his team choose their favorite small lots to feature in this exclusive wine club blend each year. The result is a unique and captivating insight into the essence of the vintage.
Powerful and alluring, this dark ruby wine boasts an abundant
bouquet of dark fruit aromas including black plum, blackberry and baked strawberry,
intertwined with notes of cassis, rosemary and mocha. Smooth, intriguing flavors of
Bing cherry, lavender, white pepper and dark chocolate endure on the palate long into
the round finish, backed by smooth tannins and balanced by bright acidity.
The majority of the fruit for this wine was sourced from our vineyards
in Oakville and Stags Leap District, with a smaller amount from our Rutherford
blocks. Petit Verdot is a late-ripening varietal, and these warm regions encourage the
development of complex flavors and a rich mouthfeel.
2013 was an ideal seaon in Napa Valley, with dry
conditions and a long, sunny summer, allowing even ripening and yielding exquisite,
balanced fruit. The fruit for this wine was harvested at an optimal level of ripeness
in early October. The berries were hand-harvested at night, carefully sorted and
destemmed to tank, where fermentation took place. Then, the wine was racked to 43%
new French oak barrels, where it was aged for 18 months prior to bottling.
Food Pairing Notes
With abundant flavors of its own, the 2013 Contemplate would be an
excellent partner to a sweet yet savory meal like roasted chicken with plum salsa or
flatbread with grilled peaches and prosciutto. This wine would also make a delicious
and memorable cheese course when paired with cave aged Gruyere, a textured and
robust cow’s milk cheese.
