Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in color and richly woven with aromas of red berries and vanilla, this wine is a hallmark example of Pine Ridge Vineyards; refined elegance, soft and supple yet powerfully robust, complex and layered. Flavors of mixed berry compote, savory bacon and spices with a hint of vanilla and oak, lead to a round entry with fresh acidity and a long sweet vanilla finish. Try with braised short ribs in a port sauce.
Vineyard Notes
Fruit was harvested from select estate vineyards in the Rutherford, Carneros, Stags Leap District, and Oakville sub-appellations of the Napa Valley. Each appellation, with its distinct terroir, constitutes a singular thread. The winemaker skillfully wove them together to craft a finished wine.
Production Notes
Two natural events persist in California, droughts and earthquakes, and in 2014 we experienced both in the Napa Valley. Pine Ridge Vineyards sits on solid rock so the winery did not suffer damage during the earthquake. It was the third consecutive year of drought and the third fantastic vintage with perfectly ripe fruit coupled with high acidity. Weather overall was a bit cooler than in 2013, but conditions were excellent with no real threat to the vines. A mild winter combined with heavy rains in February and March nourished the thirsty vines and resulted in early budbreak.
Winemaker Notes
Grapes were hand-picked in the early morning and sorted in the field before arriving at the cellar for destemming. Oakville tends to produce grapes with powerful tannins, so great care was taken not to over extract, which resulted in a softer tannin profile. After fermentation, the wine was racked to 50 percent new French oak barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for a total of 18 months before bottling.
Food Pairing Notes
The complex and silky texture of this wine would pair beautifully with braised short ribs in a port sauce. Additionally, this wine would pair excellently with a selection of charcuterie and a hard Italian cheese, such as Pecorino Gran Reserva.
